FUE Hair Transplantation

Extraction of Grafts Using the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Technique

The traditional hair transplantation method, the FUT (Follicular Unit Transfer) technique, has been replaced since 2003 by the more advanced, successful, and effective “FUE” technique. This new method eliminates the undesirable outcomes of FUT procedures and has become widely accepted due to technological and technical advancements in the field. Today, the FUT method is generally no longer accepted or practiced.

How Does the FUE Technique Work?

In the FUE technique, grafts are carefully and individually extracted from the donor area using cylindrical micro punches with a diameter of 0.7 to 0.8 mm. While hair follicles were initially removed using a “manual punch,” later, “micromotor” devices were introduced, which continue to be used today.

Hair Transplantation Process

  1. Preparation Phase: Before the hair transplant procedure begins, the entire hair is shaved using a hair clipper. Once the front hairline is determined, local anesthesia is applied to the donor area, ensuring rapid numbing. During the procedure, the patient does not feel any pain and can experience the process comfortably. Since the patient remains fully conscious, regular breaks can be taken to enhance comfort.
  2. Graft Extraction: The extraction of hair follicles takes approximately three hours. Since hair roots begin to die if left at room temperature for more than two hours, the grafts are stored in a solution called “HypoSol Fluid” at a temperature between +4 to 10 degrees Celsius to maintain their viability. The extracted grafts are then sorted into groups of single, double, or triple grafts based on the number of hair strands.

  3. Transplantation Phase: After the extraction, the actual hair transplantation begins. First, the recipient area is quickly numbed with local anesthesia, followed by the opening of small channels approximately 3 mm deep to implant the hair follicles optimally. The grafts are placed into these channels with great precision, ensuring the correct angle. This procedure takes about three hours. Once the transplantation is completed, the donor area is bandaged, marking the end of the operation. The entire procedure takes between 6 and 9 hours in total.

Advantages of the FUE Technique

One of the biggest advantages of the FUE technique is that only very small channels, less than 1 mm in diameter, are opened in the donor area, preventing deep scars. This allows patients to return to their normal daily activities just a few hours after the procedure, offering significant comfort. As a minimally invasive method, it provides more natural and aesthetically pleasing results. Additionally, the FUE technique minimizes the risk of bleeding and postoperative complications.
